Singer-songwriter Maddox Jones is bringing some much-needed optimism to listeners this Spring with the release of his latest single “Can’t Wait for the Summer” on April 16th.

A breezy and bittersweet ode to simpler times, “Can’t Wait for the Summer” captures in song our collective desire to escape the trials and tribulations of the past year and enjoy carefree summer days once again. Jones’ new single sees the singer-songwriter reminiscing about romantic memories over a vibrant palette of guitar, synths and vocal harmonies, as he recalls “dreaming the day away into an 8track recorder, wishing you were mine”.

Masterfully bringing together a carefree pop vibe with subtle notes of nostalgia, Maddox Jones is helping the nation push through these final few weeks of lockdown with “Can’t Wait for the Summer”.  “This release is a fun, optimistic guitar driven pop record perfect for now as we all can’t wait for this summer and for lockdown to finally be over!” - Maddox Jones

Formerly the front man of lauded indie-rock outfit The Departure, Maddox Jones made his solo debut in 2020 with his EP, Headspace. Receiving praise from the likes of SPIN, American Songwriter, BBC, Record Of The Day and iHeart Radio the EP climbed to #4 on the iTunes UK Singer/songwriter chart. The title track and lead single also rose to #11 in the Music Week commercial pop club charts.

After experimenting successfully with a synth-led electronic sound on Headspace, Jones is proving his versatility and range by moving into new sonic territory and breaking new musical ground. “Can’t Wait for the Summer” is a glorious guitar-driven pop record, built on incredibly catchy melodies and an anthemic, radio-ready chorus that’s begging to be blasted from the speakers at Glastonbury’s main stage.

Co-produced by Billy Lockett and David Crawford and mixed by Ed Buller, known for his work with Suede, Pulp, and White Lies, the track brings together polished production, heartfelt songwriting and authentic emotion to produce what’s undoubtedly one of 2021’s brightest new pop songs.

Maddox says of the creative process and story to the song: “I wrote “Can’t Wait For The Summer” in February of this year. I was moving house and I found an old 8 track recorder that I used to record with. It made me think of simpler times, spending days writing music and getting lost in romance. I wanted to write a song without limits, a song where my imagination could go anywhere. “Can’t Wait For The Summer” is about the ultimate romance; images of people dancing in the streets, fairgrounds, weddings, afternoons spent listening to Taylor Swift and drinking wine. It was one of those songs that just came to me, once it was written it appeared like a gift to be honest, like the best songs do, a lot of fun!

The recording process had a similar carefree vibe to the writing process. The guitar you hear was played by Dave Crawford and it was the 1st take. I was literally shouting out the chords to him as he played and it just sounded great so we kept it! I then spent half a day with Billy Lockett who really bought the track to life with some synths, extra drums and piano. We basically chucked a load of ideas down and they all seemed to work. Ed Buller – Suede, Pulp, White Lies – who’s an absolute legend in the game mixed the track.”

Asked about the visuals that accompany the track, he adds: “The video was directed, filmed and edited by Rhys Dunstan who was assisted by Jez Rackham. We approached the video the same way as we approached recording the track, no limits! Although, Ironically, there were many limits so we set about creating the illusion of no limits. We hired a green screen, an old triumph and with a bunch of friends made our way to a barn at Jeffries Farm just outside Northampton, UK in a place called Daventry. Me and my co-star Celeste Charles embarked on a journey in this cool car, going everywhere we wanted by way of the green screen – safari, to the beach, anywhere we wanted. Filmed in the same vein as movies like Grease with a bit of Austin powers thrown in, ultimately I want the viewers to smile and just have a laugh when watching the video.”
